Industry Challenges

The household appliance industry has over 300 manufacturers, however the top 20 in size account for ~90% of the industry’s sales. The recent economic recession has had a long-term impact on the housing market and consumer spending, both major contributors to appliance sales. Thus, the industry has been severely challenged.

How is the industry responding? There has been much industry consolidation during the past 5 years, and manufacturers are placing greater emphasis on product development, especially those products that meet the U.S. government’s criteria for ENERGY STAR© certification. Consumer demand for energy-efficient units, for both new and replacement products, will increase as a result of tax-incentives offered with these purchases. And the US government has offered tax incentives to motivate consumer spending in key areas. . .

However, many manufacturing facilities are old, and are characterized by inefficient operations. Problems such as congestion, process flow, and stamping operations are in need of cost reduction and the application of lean manufacturing principles to eliminate waste and reduce variation. And the appliance industry could realize cost savings and competitive operations through an outsourcing strategy that puts brings expertise and lower costs to their operations.
